‘Deity’ is a series of images and performances which stem from wanting to reevaluate and reconstruct female archetypes, and the restrictive female narratives found in fairytales, folklore and therefore within modern culture.
Using mixed media, performance and photography collaborations – Rebecca Johnson explores the semiotics of dress, power of personal adornment and the construction of identity as an empowering performance ritual.
Performing as a showperson internationally for twelve years, Rebecca (Missy Macabre) has performed traditional fakir circus acts using broken glass, fire and beds of nails, and is one of the most prolific showwomen of her generation.
Whilst playing with female identity through pain, performance and costume, Rebecca subverted the traditional roles of the ‘showgirl’, whilst simultaneously exploring her heritage of showpeople, performers and Irish Travellers/Romanichal.
Rebecca has been featured in international press (The Guardian, El Mundo, Helsingin Sanomat) numerous books (Burlesque Italia, The Night Flowers, The Dark Carnival.) research papers, music videos, and television programmes.
